With my youngest graduating from high school this year, I am constantly asked about 'empty nest' syndrome. The questioner is often bewildered at my response ~ I've spent a lifetime of preparing my child for this day! It is truly the first day of the rest of their lives. They can be the person they have already been for so long; years before their chronological peers. Yes, it is challenging to parent a gifted child, but the rewards far outweigh the challenge!

Gladwell's point is that we are afraid to admit that success (as he defines it) is not merely a product of hard work and raw talent, it's a product of circumstances. If more talented individuals were exposed to "outlier" producing circumstances, we'd be better off as a society. It's a rallying cry for improving modern education.

The news about lack of reading in adults is very sad. Reading is the love of my life, and without it I would surely be a lesser person. Fortunately, my love of reading was nurtured in my young years by a favorite aunt, a teacher, who sent me books for birthdays and Christmas. Today many of those same children's and young adult books still grace my bookshelves. Of course, now days my favorite aunt goes by the name 'Grandma', and encourages children all over the country to read. Thank you Ellie, for my love of books!

Thank you, Ellie! I appreciate your comments, especially the last one. The WSJ article paints the parents as unreasonably impatient, since the TAG Plan was just passed in Auguest, 2009. What the WSJ left out of their background and time-line is that 20 years of refusal to comply despite persistent advocacy are behind the action we took with the complaint!
